Castable is a granular and powdery material made of refractory material, and is composed of a combination of binder and moisture. It has high fluidity, is suitable for construction by casting method, and is a common unshaped refractory that can be hardened without heating. It is composed of refractory aggregate, powder, binder, admixture, water or other liquid materials. Generally, it is cast and formed by pouring, vibrating or tamping at the site of use, and can also be used as prefabricated parts.


Refractory castable is a kind of amorphous refractory that is widely produced and used at present. It is mainly used to construct integral structures such as the lining of various heating furnaces. Certain high-quality varieties can also be used in smelting furnaces. For example, aluminate cement refractory castables can be widely used in various heating furnaces and other thermal equipment without slag and acid and alkali erosion. In the parts that are eroded by molten iron, molten steel and slag and have high working temperature, such as tapping grooves, ladles, blast furnace shafts, tapping trenches, etc. Refractory castables made of high-quality granular and powdery materials with high alumina content and good sintering.


Neutral raw materials are mainly chromite, graphite, silicon carbide (manufactured), which chemically react with acidic or alkaline slag at any temperature. There are currently two such raw materials in nature, namely chromite and graphite. In addition to natural graphite, there are also artificial graphites. These neutral raw materials have the resistance of magnesia carbon bricks to slag. They are suitable for use as the interlayer of basic refractory materials and acid refractory materials.


Mainly magnesite (magnesite), dolomite, lime, olivine, serpentine, high alumina raw materials (sometimes neutral), these raw materials have strong resistance to alkaline slag, and are mostly used for masonry. It is used to build an alkaline furnace, but it is particularly prone to chemical reactions with acidic slag to form salts.


Over the past decade, magnesia-carbon brick technology has grown from relatively modest beginnings to a range of highly complex products that meet the needs of a variety of steelmaking applications. This evolution to advanced products stems from the development of ingredients and new product manufacturing techniques. The steelmaker's ongoing service pilot program is also a key factor in the advancement of magnesia-carbon bricks in the field. These efforts have led to an understanding of which refractory composition Z provides cost-effective performance under various operating conditions. Steelmakers and refractory suppliers are expected to continue their efforts to make further progress. Research and development of carbon additives, metal additives, magnesia properties, manufacture and application of bricks, etc.


Semi-dry gunning is a method in which a mixture of refractory aggregates, binders, additives, etc. is mixed with water through the water ring holes at the magnesia-carbon bricked end of the spray gun, and compressed air is applied to the gunning surface. The amount of water can be adjusted at any time according to the gunning situation, and generally fluctuates between 10-20%, which is much lower than the water consumption of wet gunning. Therefore, the bulk density of the gunning layer is large and the shrinkage is small, and a thicker gunning layer can be obtained with better durability, but the rebound amount is slightly higher than that of the wet method, and this gunning method is more commonly used.
